Palmer police chief (Brent Myers) arrests mayor, who suspends chief
PALMER, Tenn. (AP) – A funny thing happened on the way to the Palmer board alderman meeting.
The police chief arrested the mayor, who made bond and then suspended the entire police department – the chief and one patrolman.
Mayor Kenley Campbell and the recently elected alderman – L.H. Keener. Patricia S. Kilgore, Billy C. Morrison and Joy Shrum – were scheduled to hold their first meeting Tuesday.
But as Campbell approached city hall, he was arrested by Police Chief Brent Myers, charged with misconduct and resisting arrest. Myers was supposedly mad because he heard the mayor and the aldermen planned to fire him, Campbell said.
The mayor was carted off to the Grundy County Jail at Altamont. He quickly made bond and returned to the meeting where the board suspended the police department.
Campbell said he had not planned to fire the chief, who has been in office about a year, but after what happened, the council decided some action was necessary.
Until the situation is resolved, the Grundy County Sheriff’s department is providing law enforcement in the Monteagle Mountain town, about 40 miles northwest of Chattanooga.
